[green]It was exactly on November 19, 2011—seventy years ago—that the first URAL sidecars were introduced.
[green]Faced with the imminent threat of an attack by German troops, the decision was made to evacuate and relocate the factory from Moscow.
[green]On November 19, 1941, the first train arrived at the station in Irbit, a small town 300 km from the capital, in the foothills of the Eastern Urals, the first train carrying the machinery, tools, and parts needed to begin production of a sidecar known as the M72, a replica of BMW’s M71, the plans for which had been gifted to the Soviet Union when the two nations were still at peace.
[green]It was sometime in 1942 that the first units rolled off the assembly line at the Irbit plant. Nearly 9,500 units followed between then and 1945.
[green]From its inception to the present day, more than 3 million vehicles have rolled off the assembly line at this plant.
[green]To mark the 70th anniversary, the M70 Anniversary model, based on the M72, has been given the same color scheme as its predecessor: a subtle blend of brown, gray, and olive green.
